Northdown House Margate was the venue for Jessica and Craig to hold their Wedding reception and party and we had the pleasure of being with them and Photographing their special day.
We spent the day with them starting with Jess for the Bridal preparation shots before their Horse Drawn Carriage left for St Mary’s Chapel at the Holy Trinity Church in Margate Kent. After the Wedding Ceremony it was a short trip to Northdown House Margate for their arrival and more Photography. Speeches, First Dance, Cake Cutting and some of the evening party were all included and we also took fun and relaxed shots of the guests and family enjoying themselves. They decided to go with a package that included all of the images on DVD. After careful editing and post processing they had two discs and 848 images of their day. Their discs were presented in a lovely box along with a private usage copyright certificate.

St Marys Chapel is a small and intimate setting for a Wedding and is only a very short distance from Northdown House Margate. It was a beautiful sunny day despite the threat of some early rain so we managed to get all of the lovely outdoor shots that we planned. The gardens in the small enclosed area next to the building provided a great setting for the formal group photos. The gardens were also a nice setting for some romantic photography with just the Jess and Craig before we moved inside and made use of the large open staircase for another photo opportunity.
The main dining room is bright and airy but the window behind the top table at Northdown House Margate cast a strong backlight on the speeches. This would normally have meant at least couple of stops over exposure to get it right in camera. But I wanted a balanced look without the background being totally burnt out and overpowering. To get the result I wanted I used a slave Nikon SB 900 on a lightstand in front and to the side of the top table – suitably out of the guests line of sight. I triggered this from an on camera flash used as master only and adjusted the settings in camera with the wonderful NIKON CLS menu.
I used an SB900 off camera outside for some of the posed shots and left it on camera to overcome the strong sunlight for other parts of the day. For faster charging I also used a battery pack on my belt. Indoors for the First Dance photos I used the Nikon SB900 on camera with a Honl bounce card to provide a key light and some background fill from the flash which was directed at the white ceiling. The dance floor is quite small at Northdown House Margate but gave me enough room to move around and get some great shots.
